Cathyann Lautier Burgess is a first generation American born to WWII immigrants from the Mediterranean island of Malta.
"I have been drawing or painting as long as I can remember and consciously thought of myself as artist, at age 13. Born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, NY, my first art museum visit was at the Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The next time artwork made an indelible mark was when I was sixteen, and had an “aesthetic” experience sitting before Picasso’s Guernica and some other surrealist painters. I was indeed lucky to have been exposed and introduced to much of the world’s finest art being raised in that city."
I hold a MSEd in Art from SUNY College at Buffalo, NY.
My teaching experience in art for over 25 years includes formal schools, both public and private, museums and workshops.
After retirement, I was able to become a student again in the workshops of  Nelson Shanks, Daniel Greene, and Matthew Mancini. I studied figure and portrait work as that was my first love in art making. There is still so much to glean from those much more experienced than I. I love learning from both past and contemporaries masters. Artists of influence are many but clearly among my favorites are Degas, Sorolla, and Sargent.
I came to the mountains after my retirement from 30 years of teaching art full time. I am a New York City native and transplant living in the countryside of Western North Carolina with my husband since 2014 and loving it.
