Carmen was born in Cincinnati, grew up in Los Angeles and was always interested in art. After graduating from California State University at Los Angeles with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art, Carmen began his career as an art director in an advertising agency. Soon he opened his own advertising agency which eventually grew to four offices across the country.  In 2007, with a close friend and partner, Carmen opened an animation studio in Los Angeles, which is currently producing television shows for the Disney Jr. Channel.  In 2010, Carmen and his wife bought a home in the artist community of Laguna Beach, and immediately got inspired to start painting in oils.  For most of his life, Carmen admired the works of California's early impressionists, so he began spending hours studying the traditional styles of William Wendt, Edgar Payne, and Alson Clark. His spent his vacations taking workshops from some of today's top impressionists, including Matt Smith, Brian Blood, Randal Sexton and Ray Roberts.  In his free time he studied with Robin Hall and Jove Wang to further his understanding of his new medium.
"In my career, pencil, ink and markers were my tools of trade, so oils were a very foreign substance to me.  But with the aid of some self-help books and wonderful teachers I began to become more comfortable with my new medium.  I've taken pearls of wisdom from each of these fine artists in the quest to develop my own style; still a work in progress. But, what I've learned from all these artists, is that art is a long journey and we continue to learn and grow on the way.  So far I'm enjoying the ride."
Recently Carmen's painting, "Central Park in January" was admitted into the American Impressionist Society's 16th annual juried exhibition.
