Biography


Bryan Koontz residing near Asheville, NC,  has pursued art in various ways since his youth. Early explorations into painting and drawing helped guide him into the graphic arts field. He graduated with a B.S. degree in Commercial Design from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, 1985, and has since worked in the print and graphic design industry for over 30 years. As a freelancer, he has worked on numerous graphic design projects, private fine art commissions,  as well as book and commercial illustrations. (Notable illustrations include the pen & ink drawings and Christmas card paintings you may see in the surrounding region used for the Mast General Store headquartered in Valle Crucis near Boone, NC.) Although, largely self taught, he studied under several proven painters located in Asheville, NC, to improve his fine art skills. These experiences opened his horizons to the almost lost art of realistic painting and helped broadened his desire to paint in the similar realistic styles as the mid to late 19th century American painters in landscape, and still life; American and European Romantic and Pre-Raphaelite painters for portraiture and figurative work; and the great American Illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He considers that he will be gleaning and learning from the wealth of this body of work for the balance of his life.
 
Another important aspect of his art is that Bryan is a lifelong native to the area, with a family heritage spanning back two centuries. He has developed a deep, intrinsic appreciation for the mountain culture, heritage, and scenery. His great desire is to capture some of the region’s surrounding beauty and instill it in artwork that compels one to stop and engage with wonder.
