I was born in the small desert town of Ridgecrest, CA, the youngest of five children. I’ve always loved art.  I remember learning to draw from “How to Draw” books even before I could read. One of my earlies memories is sitting on the top of my bunk bed in our geodesic dome drawing a horse’s head from a “How to Draw Horses” book. One of my older sister’s friend was encouraging me to be an artist even if people tell me I can’t. Even when I was not drawing, I was creating memory pictures. One of my favorite memory pictures is of me running barefoot in the soft sand of a dry desert ravine. In the foreground are my discarded little sandals. I am running away, long golden-brown hair flying wildly, and backlit by the yellow setting sun.
I lived in Ridgecrest in a geodesic dome until I was 11 years old when we moved to Sylmar, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles. When I was 20, I moved back to the dome living with one of my brothers to help my oldest brother start a restaurant for six months. I still dreamed of being an artist. I was ready to move back to the city when I saw the local college was offering a sculpture class. I enrolled even though I would have to stay a few extra months. I ended up attending Cerro Coso Community College for five years receiving an AA in art.
In 1990, I earned a BA in Art from California State University, Long Beach. After graduating I moved back to Sylmar and started teaching at a preschool and later taught middle school and high school.
