Beatriz Portela is a visual artist who primarily focuses on the natural world. She’s currently exploring the impermanence of nature and the effects of global warming and other natural and unnatural occurrences on the planet. She uses various media, including acrylic paints, oils, soft pastels and block printing. The current series of paintings she is working on is called “Flowers & Grenades.” In these, she uses grenades as a metaphor for the fragility of nature and of life in general. Beatriz' “Our Story” series is comprised of 18 mixed-media block prints, each depicting a different animal that is currently endangered due to a variety of reasons, including deforestation, climate change and pollution. These portraits are in black & white, except the eyes, which are painted in lifelike colors, for more impact. As is often said, “the eyes are the window to the soul.” Her abstract paintings capture the motion and feel of natural phenomena that intrigue her: flowing water, raging fires, a swirling hurricane, space…
Beatriz’ work has been displayed at the Cornell Art Museum in Delray Beach, FL; the State Capital Bldg. in Tallahassee, FL; Fairchild Tropical Garden and the Coral Gables Community Center, in Coral Gables, FL; Old Court House Arts Center in Woodstock, IL; Self-Help Graphics in Los Angeles, CA; and SG Gallery in Venice, Italy.
