Artist Barbara Nuss

An example of fine art by Barbara Nuss

Photo of Barbara Nuss

By painting landscapes directly from nature and still lifes from studio arrangements, I learned the nuances of light and color on every imaginable subject.  The importance of painting from life can not be stressed enough, as photographs are inaccurate both in value and color. From 1983 to 1996 I taught still life and landscape painting in my atelier and from 1998 through the present day I share my painting skills through area plein air workshops and studio teaching.
I wrote a book on landscape composition, "Secrets to Composition," which is available here on my website, along with a DVD of a plein air painting which I did along the Potomac River.
I credit my artistic development to my B.F.A. from Syracuse University, the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, my experience as a graphic artist and illustrator, various workshop instructors, and my inquisitive students.  My valuable experience as an illustrator is difficult to duplicate as illustration has become nearly obsolete.
I am a member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painter's Society (signature member),  Oil Painters of America, International Guild of Realism (artist member), American Women Artists (member of distinction), Women Artists of the West (signature member), the Baltimore Watercolor Society (artist member) and am past president of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters.
Currently my paintings may be seen at
The Berkeley Gallery in Warrenton, VA,
and at the McBride Gallery in Annapolis, MD.
