Artist Karen Pedersen

An example of fine art by Karen Pedersen

Photo of Karen Pedersen

I am Karen Pedersen, an oil painter who loves painting local landscapes. I began painting in the mid 1970’s and since 2013 I have been blessed to paint fulltime. Growing up in Calgary AB, Canada I had easy access to the Foothills, Rocky Mountains, and unique prairie landscape of the area.  I moved to Carstairs AB, a small town 30 minutes from Calgary. Although I paint mostly in studio, I believe one of the best ways of observing and studying nature firsthand is to paint plein air (painting outdoors).
My approach to art has been a combination of imagination, intuition which is inspired by my surroundings. My paintings are inspired by my travels through Saskatchewan to Vancouver Island; there is so much diversity in the landscapes between these three provinces.
My goal as an artist is to focus on achieving a quality of movement, form, and light drawing the viewer into the subject.
Looking out at the land while driving or better yet as the passenger, I soak in that point of view.  It often takes me twice as long to get somewhere due to stopping to sketch or take photos and on occasion paint.
Playing with the image through composition and design onto a new canvas or panel is exciting.  I have varied interest in subjects and I love to paint whatever catches my eye. I look forward to sharing these images with you.
