Biography

I studied drawing and painting at the University of Maryland and other schools in the 1970s. After a career as a poet and professor of literature at Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of Southern Maine, I turned to painting full time, first landscapes in soft pastel, then oils, then abstract and non-objective works in acrylic, encaustic, oil and gouache. I’ve spent considerable time working in the classical method focusing on the representational still life. Most recently I’ve been painting geometric abstracts in gouache on cradled birch panels.

I’ve taken workshops through the Lyme Art Association, Castle Hill Arts in N. Truro, MA, as well as workshops in encaustic at R&F Paints in Kingston, NY and Northeast Arts in Gloucester, MA. I’ve had three solo shows, work exhibited in numerous juried and non-juried exhibitions.

Individual works are in private collections in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, and in The Florence Griswold Museum.  I am a member of the Mystic Museum of Arts, the Lyme Art Association, and an elected member of the Essex Art Association.
