In one form or another, I have involved myself in art all my life, - but painting has been the constant.
I was born and raised in South Africa by parents who encouraged any talents they saw in their children. For me this included riding, tennis, swimmimg, ballet, and also art at the local Technical College on Saturday mornings, -  memorable mostly for being in a freezing building. 
Today, my paintings often result from a nostalgic emotion. I love the glory of startlingly beautiful garden flowers like my mother grew and I grow now: the sea and waves and rocks with spray. How wonderful the summer holidays were! I spent many hours roaming the neighbourhood or strolling along the beach, - it was fairly safe for a child alone in those days . . . And other times I happily cooped myself in my room with a sketch book, vase of white daisies, or seagull’s wing found on the beach, and water colours. 
It was lucky I liked my own company, as my brother and sister were too young to be companions. I was a thoughtful serious child, and had long conversations with myself, sorting out my problems. With my thoughts and art I felt I could control my own world.
My first professional appointment was teaching art to the girls at Springfield Convent, K to 12. I was newly married and fresh out of university, armed with a BA in Art and English and teaching diploma. In the early years of our married life, Rob and I often painted plein air together in oils.
