An Introduction to The Art Edge

by Brian Sherwin on 7/25/2013 7:09:01 PM

This article is by Brian Sherwin, regular contributing writer for FineArtViews. Brian Sherwin is an art critic, blogger, curator, artist and writer based near Chicago, Illinois. He has been published in Hi Fructose Magazine, Illinois Times, and other publications, and linked to by publications such as The Huffington Post, The Boston Globe, Juxtapoz Magazine, Deutsche Bank ArtMag, ARTLURKER, Myartspace, Blabbermouth, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Conservative Punk, Modern Art Obsession, Citizen LA, Shark Forum, Two Coats of Paint, Vandalog, COMPANY, artnet, WorldNetDaily (WND) and Art Fag City. I'm pleased to announce the launch of The Art Edge blog.

A little background information concerning the development of The Art Edge: I've been a FineArtViews (FAV) regular contributing writer for several years. I have covered a range of art world / art market topics in addition to general art marketing tips. That said, there are only so many FineArtViews newsletter 'slots' each week. I currently have enough articles on FAV to cover my Saturday slot until early 2014! I post frequently... and we, the FASO Team, want the information that I provide to reach YOU in a timely manner.

Clint Watson, the Founder of FASO, asked me if I would be interested in spearheading my own blog and newsletter in order to achieve that goal. I gladly accepted his request -- The Art Edge was born. The Art Edge is part of the FASO family of informative blogs. I will strive to deliver the same quality that you have come to know on FineArtViews.

My plans for The Art Edge (TAE): The Art Edge will involve the same caliber of content that I have provided for FineArtViews. That said, by maintaining my own blog and newsletter I will be able to distribute time sensitive information -- such as art exhibit reviews and other art-related news -- quickly. I plan to go in several directions with TAE.

1.) The Art Edge will feature an on-going interview series with artists, art dealers, curators, and other art world professionals. I have interviewed hundreds of artists in the past: James Rosenquist, Mark Ryden, Michel Craig-Martin, Sylvia Sleigh, Norman Carlberg, William T. Wiley, Chet Zar, Aleksandra Mir, Mark Staff Brandl... the list goes on. I have also interviewed my fair share of art dealers: Edward Winkleman, Caryn Coleman, Fraser Kee Scott, Martita Slewe, Monique Meloche, Jan Wentrup, Steven Krul, Sara Nightingale... the list goes on. I want to continue this wave of insightful interviews on TAE.

2.) The Art Edge will regularly feature specific directions in art. For example, at the time of this writing I have been focusing on the art of drawing. I also plan to explore sculpture, installation art, art photography... and anything else that I can think of. I may end up devoting each month to a direction in art. For example, I may focus on abstract art in August... followed by various forms of sculpture in September.

3.) The Art Edge will include occasional art-related book reviews. For example, I'm actively seeking art marketing books to review. Additionally, I plan to review books offered by artists about their artwork. Feel free to contact me if you have authored or co-authored a book about art.

4.) The Art Edge will offer information about upcoming art exhibits. I will place most of my focus on upcoming exhibits involving FASO artists. If it goes well I will likely offer some form of weekly 'art exhibit roundup'. Feel free to reach out to me with art exhibit information.

5.) The Art Edge will feature guest authors. Artists ranging from Sarah Maple to Travis Louie have submitted articles to me in the past. I want to take that direction further with TAE. Contact me if you have something to say about the state of the art world today.

In closing, this is an exciting time for me. I have dedicated myself to art blogging for 8 years so far. I must send a HUGE thank you to everyone who has read my articles over the years. I appreciate every comment. I hope that many of you will 'walk the edge' with me on my TAE journey. Feel free to contact me concerning The Art Edge. I can't promise that every exhibit review request, interview request, or guest article request will be followed up on... BUT I will try. It is best to write me at bsherwin AT Furthermore, I invite all of you to sign up for The Art Edge newsletter, click here.

Take care, Stay true,

Brian Sherwin

Wonderful, Brian! I love the NAME already! :)

Geri deGruy
In your features, consider fiber art and mixed media!

Hi Brian,
Very cool idea!! I really love your articles, as well as Carolyn Henderson's.
One book that I'd love to see highlighted (because I learned SO much from it, my "bible") is "Colored Pencil Portraits STEP-BY-STEP" by Ann Kullberg. Lots of awesome info for anyone using colored pencil as well as graphite.
Good luck!

Brian Sherwin
Geri -- You said, "In your features, consider fiber art and mixed media!"

I'll likely tackle both soon. We have explored a little of both directions with the FFA series on FineArtViews. BUT I can go a bit deeper than that with The Art Edge. I also want to do a lot more with sculpture.

Brian Sherwin
Sherri -- Thank you. Thanks for the suggestion as well. By the way, I have an interview lined up with the President of the Colored Pencil Society of America. :)

Brian Sherwin
Everyone -- Thanks for the kind words. If you have any interview or book review suggestions... feel free to offer them.

Susan Holland
Brian, this would be a good forum to discuss the "conceptual art" and installations.

A book list might be worthwhile. I would like to put The Art Spirit by Henri high on such a list.

Brian....I would love to see a review of scott Naismith's color wheel....he has several videos about it ++...interesting concepts...

Nikolas -- Ahoy! ;p It arrived. I should have something posted soon. Can you send me a message on Facebook? That way I can ask you a few questions easily. :)
