Biography
Arto Isotalo (b. 1974) is self-taught as an artist. He has studied art by visiting museums, reading art books and blogs and studying the works and techniques of the great masters.
In his paintings, Arto wants to bring out the beauty of the subject. People and nature are his main subjects of interest. His primary source of inspiration is light, and he is especially interested in capturing the effect of light and shadow. The movement and reflections of water fascinates him continuously. Most landscape paintings he creates are painted "en plein air", in the open air.
Arto paints in a loose and painterly manner, while paying great attention to the accuracy of drawing. He works in a style that fits between impressionism and realism. He is inspired by the works of Anders Zorn, Joaquín Sorolla, John Singer Sargent, Ilya Repin and many other masters of the past and present. Like the aforementioned, Arto paints mainly in alla prima technique. The idea is to quickly capture the essence of the subject with bold brushwork. Applying this technique contributes for a fresh and energetic painting without the piece looking stiff and overworked.
