Self-portrait III by Abby Rovaldi

Award-winning artist Abby Rovaldi describes herself as being devoted to drawing and the exploration of sculptural form. Rovaldi has stated that her current drawings involve a progression of discovery, transformation and renewal. Her powerful works of art begin with simple lines of ink and charcoal.
Abby Rovaldi has expressed that she rarely makes changes to her drawings while working. Instead, she allows her work to flow as she builds upon what was previously drawn. Her fluid process focuses upon the relationships established by a combination of natural alteration and decisive marks. Concerning her artistic process, Rovaldi has stated, "Relying on what was drawn before, making relationships, joining forms together and permitting the drawing to do some of the work itself all lend a hand in determining the final state of each drawing and opening my mind to previously unthought-of and unexplored directions.".

Art critic Brian Sherwin commented on Abby Rovaldi's drawings, saying, "The strength of Rovaldi's work, in my opinion, is in the balance she has mastered with her marks. The images I viewed convey a sense of control... while at the same time being loose. Her work is deceptively simple... the relationships between her marks are complex." Sherwin added, "These drawings are fueled by emotion -- I can 'feel it' upon viewing. These are powerful marks created by a skilled artist who clearly has passion for what she does -- AND passion for the human condition. Her drawings are a psychological feast for the eyes."
