Biography
Isabelle is a Singapore artist. After having moved around South East Asia for two decades, currently she lives and paints full time in Hong Kong.
She is a Signature Member of Pastel Society of America and some recognized art societies in Europe and U.S.A.. Watercolor is another medium she always enjoy working with.
In 2010, the International Association of Pastel Society ( I A P S ) has juried her works as one of the 37 paintings shown at the Butler Museum and to be included in the 17th IAPS Juried Web Show. The Pastel Society of America juried her work into their 38th & 39th Annual Pastel Only Show at the National Arts Club, New York City in 2010 & 2011.
Her painting, Hong Kong Residents #18 won the Award of Merit Pastel Society of America at the 17th Degas Pastel Society Show 2011 in Louisianna, U.S.A. ; Hong Kong Residents #10 was awarded the Finalist Outstanding Pastel at the Bold Brush Painting Competition hosted by Fine Art Studio Online in October 2010. A Journey West #2 was awarded the Joyce Kelly Memorial Purchase Award at the 12th Biennial National Show in 2008 hosted by Degas Pastel Society.
In 2011, Isabelle has her work images featured in 4 publications : Les Maitres du Pastel 2011 ( Pratique des Arts ); Best of Worldwide Charcoal, Pastel and Pencils Vol II ( Kennedy Publishings ); Singapore Pastel Artists ( National Library Board Singapore ) and Arts Charity June issue ( Arts Charity Foundation Taiwan ).
The diverse subjects she chooses to paint are based largely on Asian art and culture. She believes painting is all about colors and that is what Asian cultures speak. She is particularly intrigued by the costumes, head-dress and especially hand embroidered shoes worn by Chinese women and children. She see these costumes are artwork in themselves.
These folk subjects have driven her to develop a few painting series. The tiny shoes are delicately rendered in both soft pastel and watercolor in the series titled 'Journey' and for her, these little shoes continued to be a compelling topic. Her inspiration to paint the portraits of Chinese and Asian ladies derived from the numerous trips made around China and Asia.
The recent paintings are series of gold fish in plastic bags and ceramic wares where she drew inspiration from the busy environment in Hong Kong.
Primarily, a self-taught in drawing and painting, she enrolled her art education through Open College of the Art, a fine art correspondence institution based in United Kingdom under the tutelage of Edward Phelps. She received the residency fellowship at Vermont Studio Center, U.S.A. in 2001 & 2008 and attended other intensive courses and workshop in U.K., France, Australia and Indonesia.
