California born Chang graduated the Art Center College of Design in 1981 and after 20 years as an award winning illustrator, embarked in a career in fine art in 2000.

He has been an instructor of drawing and painting for fourteen years, including 3 years at Pratt Institute in New York and currently at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and he conducts painting workshops nationally.

His work has been recognized nationally and profiled in many art publications, including the covers of American Artist magazine and International Artist magazines accompanying a series of 8 articles on instructional painting he authored.

His awards include "Best of Show" at the Salon International 2003 held in San Antonio Texas, Southwest Art Award in 2008 and the Fine Art Connoisseur Award for painting in 2009, both at the California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition held at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Artist Statement:

Figure in Landscape:

A common theme in my outdoor subjects is the fieldworkers of Monterey County where I grew up. I started exploring this subject around 2001 when I had recently relocated from New York to Northern California.
These paintings were in part inspired by the writings of John Steinbeck (1902-1968) whose novels I read as a youth. His works examined the lives of working class and migrant workers in the Salinas Valley, California.
In addition, I felt this subject had an historical precedent dating as far back as the 16th century with the paintings by Peter Bruegel the Elder (1525)-1569) known for his peasant scenes and then later on with the work of Francois Millet (1814-1875) and the 19th century Naturalist Movement in general. American artists Winslow Homer (1824-1906) and Eastman Johnson (1824-1906), both painted the fieldworker and later Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) painted the fieldworker in his regional works, so I felt I could pursue this genre with a sense of substance and tradition. My works though inspired by the paintings and subjects of the past are however contemporary records of our times. I depict the farmworker honestly without idealization with an understanding of their plight. In a way I see the farmworker as a tragic figure, a metaphor for the all humanity.

Interiors
My primary goal in painting the figure in interior is to capture an ambiance of mood and emotion through manipulation of light and space. I accomplish this working with a limited palette with emphasis on grays and browns along with the observation of close value relationships.
Much of my interior subjects are biographical in nature depicting my studio and classroom environment. I find an artist's environment to be rich in character, including the people who inhabit the environment- the artists and models. The works of Vermeer (1632-1675) in particular are of great interest to me but he was not my original source of inspiration. People had remarked on the similarity of my work to his and so since then he has become a source of influence to me along with the work of Diego Velasquez (1632-1675). I have also found inspiration in the work of 20th century realist John Koch (1909-1978), who painted many of his most important paintings within the confines of his New York apartment.
