Art Budget Banks

by Luann Udell on 9/2/2010 9:22:24 AM

This post is by Luann Udell, regular contributing author for FineArtViews.  You should submit an article and share your views as a guest author by clicking here.

Years ago, I came across an unusual metal box at a flea market. Roughly 6” square and 2” deep, the lid opened to reveal six smaller metal containers. Slots on the box’s lid aligned with slots in the smaller boxes inside, and the whole thing locked shut with a key.

A little research revealed I’d found a “home budget bank.” Banks would provide such a locked box to their customers. The slots were for inserting coins or bills into each little box.

The best part: There were little labels provided, some pre-printed for rent, utilities, food.   Or you could turn the labels over and write your own financial priorities. (These are my favorite ones.)

Once a month, or when the little boxes were full, you’d return the box to the bank, where it would be unlocked.

Voila! You had successfully saved money to pay all your bills for the month.

I love so many things about these boxes.

I love the cheerful painted metal: red, yellow, turquoise and dark green. “Look!” they seem to say. “Isn’t it FUN to save?!”

I love that, human nature being what it is, the bank held the only key to the box—which is also why it’s rare to find these with their key.

I love the array of little lidded boxes inside and the different categories each person came up with. I have one with the preprinted labels. Others have handwritten labels like “stamps”, “paper”, “vacation.” I’m charmed by the idea that once you could fund an entire vacation with only enough money that would fit into a little box smaller than 3”x2”x2”…

I love imagining the age and circumstances of the previous owners. Surely “camp” and “bicycle” were for a child? But “insurance” and “rent” were for an older person.

And I found this poignant story of a home budget bank with the categories “honeymoon”, “yours”, “mine” and “ours”.

I love the hope that this simple little gadget could build character, change our spendthrift ways, and move steadily, diligently toward our goals—and our heart’s desire.

I love that each box, each label, represents a responsibility accepted—or a dream.  I love the implication that even a dream involves responsibility—planning for it, saving for it, even naming it.  Realizing it takes energy to bring that dream to fruition. I think this is the thing I love the most.

I like to imagine such a home budget bank for my art. I wonder what I would choose to budget money for. Perhaps “supplies”; “classes”; “framing”; “new studio”.

Or perhaps time? “New work/experimenting”; “cleaning the studio” (on second thought, maybe not this one); “finish an old project”; “research”. As a creative person with many demands on my time—spouse, children, aging parents, job, friends, pets, housework--I sometimes forget to just sit and dream. Perhaps a time slot/box for “daydreams”….?

I can think of some things I wouldn’t budget for—“pointless anger”; “self-doubt”; “fear of failing”; “procrastination”; “envy”. Maybe I could replace them with “forgiveness”, “confidence”, “courage”, “motivation”; “self-improvement”.

What labels would YOU put on your six little boxes, if you had a home budget bank for your art?

How perfect for today, in so many ways. I am amazed at how much even the most simple life costs these days, and continually focus on downsizing and simplifying...in order to create more time for painting and spending with art. Thanks, this touched my love for simpler times and lifted my spirits.

Great story, Luann

I think my boxes would be labeled like this:

Supplies (brushes, canvas, paint, easels)
Frames
Travel
Instruction (books, videos, classes)
Marketing

Just about everything would fit into one of those categories.

Luann, Such a touching and practical post this is. It makes me wish I had some bank boxes. Maybe I can make my own boxes and label each with appropriate messages.

Great list, I love it! I collect fun boxes and dealing with cash is so fun and real, this would be easy to out together...

How very thought-provoking Luann! So, I asked myself, what would I budget, or save, for?

I think I'd save for the special things in life. Sometimes I get so focused on the day-to-day I forget the special things. Like yesterday two friends and I went to a movie in the middle of the day (noon) and then out to lunch afterwards. It was fun! So, I'd want to make sure I had the means to do that.

The other thing I'd like a box for is to 'save' the memory of it. Or even better, to be able to in-the-moment recognize and think 'how precious this is'. : ) jp

I agree with everyone that these boxes are wonderful.
I contribute to several charities and this would make a fun way to save for my donations.

wonderful idea. I would have boxes for:
Art Supplies
Studio rent
Art Adventure Budget (aka art vacation to some wonderful plein air painting spot!)

Neat boxes. I'd imagine if banks gave those to us today there would be a hefty charge for them:)

Right now I'd fill all 6 with time. Time to paint, time to market, time to spend with the family, more time to paint.

Great article! My labels, instead of money, it would be inspiration and ideas for a/my contemporary lighting line, drawings and designs for a/my contemporary furniture line, accessories line, home decor texiles, women's apparel, outdoor sculpture line.....dreaming big!

I have always been a saver. Recent subject matter for my paintings has been Mexican painted piggy banks. One saving category that is a necessity for me is "travel." I love the stimulus of a good trip to get the creative juices going. I wish they still made the bank you describe. What a clever idea!

I just wanted to let everyone know that Luann is away from her computer at an event but she is receiving a copy of these comments. She'll respond as soon as she gets a chance and I know she appreciates the feedback.

Luann, those boxes are perfect for a still life! Put some other props by them and it is a colorful, nostalgic composition! Besides the fact that they represent an era long gone by, but maybe back in fashion during today`s economy.
When I sell a painting, I already have it spent. I sold a painting yesterday and I grabbed the latest art catalog and marked it with checkmarks what I was buying with the money. Investing into art supplies this time. Next painting sold I will take a road trip before summer is gone! I have lists of things I need to do, so I just cross them off. No spare change lying around my house to put in a box unless it is an old coin. Then it goes into my coin collection. Hey, maybe I do need one of those boxes for my coin collection!

Great story Luann! I love the message and feel inspired by it! Dreams don't happen by themselves...we need to pursue them and save for them and work hard on them.....and then we can reap the rewards of our efforts.....Thanks for sharing. And those boxes really are great painting subjects!

Luann, I love the idea of the boxes...I have always enjoyed the look of repeated drawers or containers...I think I like thinking that inside those boxes there are treasures to enjoy...

I actually have a box with cash that I made from any art related or extra income - awards, art purchase, even a small baby sitting stint that I did over the summer. In order not to spend them, I sealed the money in bank envelopes as soon as I cashed the checks that I received. I just started it in May and now it's early September and I'm happy to say that I've saved $561.14!!
My label would be 'art instruction'-- namely ISS in Taos, that costs about $900. I'm halfway there...

Thanks for your article, Luann. At least I know I'm on the right track...

Wonderful story and metaphor! I would have boxes for Time, Travel, Frames, Hired Help, Advertising, and an Artsy Outfit for gala openings!

Very lovely article. Reminds me of the 'piggy bank' era. Surprisingly, the banks too seemed to have used the same simple and best principle for a savings account.

In these days of the the credit card system, it is hard to imagine whether it is possible to bring back the golden era of simple savings plan. But I am inspired so much by this article that I have decided to start this system with my own children and grand child.

I am sure those pretty and colorful boxes will be encouragement enough for them to use it every day.

Personally my slots for the boxes would be - art materials, next exhibition, study material for my art class students, presents for family and friends and the last one for a long term savings - for my own home cum studio and later on for a trip around the world maybe. :).

Great article. As I was reading, I wondered how you were going to tie the boxes into art related concepts. Very creative.

What would I do with the savings? Spend it on knowledge! A person can never get enough of it!

I had never heard of these little budget boxes, Luann.

What an interesting concept and a lovely story you spun around it...
Creative people have the capacity to delight ...
thanks for being creative..
