Biography

About the Artist
Two things I love are... my family and art. When I am not spending time with my family & friends, I am usually painting, thinking about painting or talking with another artist about painting. It's the process of creating that I can get so wrapped up in. I've been known to completely loose track of time while painting, as if time stops, and I am thankful for my family responsibilities to keep me grounded.

I have learned to appreciate all types of paintings, from a beautiful representational piece done by John Singer Sargent to a completely abstract yet colorful work by Richard Diebenkorn. Of course my favorite artist is still the highly intuitive painter Vincent Van Gogh. I actually cried when I first saw an original of Vincent's Bedroom in Arles at the Art Institute in Chicago. There are many historic artists with a body of work that appeal to me. For example, I love the work of Monet (for color), Matisse (for composition), Fechin (for expression), DeKooning (for brushwork), Wyeth (for his control of values), O'Keefe (for simplicity), Cassatt (for everything), Bongart (for passing along the Russian traditions), and Rembrandt (for his sense of light and paint quality). Each of these artists have a uniqueness in their work that draws me in. I believe it is essential to study the masters.

Born in Washington DC and raised in Maryland, I spent many days as a teen in the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian. I was exposed to a great sense of art history and culture. As an adult, I have been fortunate to travel and live in many parts of the country. My husband is in the hotel business and we have lived in a variety of states. In my twenties and early thirties, I worked as a lead graphic designer for a marketing company in Washington state. I also free-lanced after my two children were born. When we moved to Denver, I took up oil painting seriously as a way to stay creative while being home with my small children.. I've always been drawn to fine art and have painted in others mediums like watercolor, acrylic & pastels. Yet I find myself best suited to oils.

Artist Statement
As a painter, I usually begin with graphic shapes. I think about abstract qualities such as values, shape, form, light, color, edges and texture ~ constantly comparing how these elements interplay. Contrasting elements like warm vs. cool, light vs. shadow, heavy impasto vs. smooth texture, rigid vs. organic, small vs. big shapes; these are things I pay attention to. I am less interested in a particular subject and more attracted to the overall abstract qualities, rhythm and composition of a painting. My endeavor is to create a strong visual dialog.

Whether my painting is of a figure, or an inanimate object like a shoe, I am drawn to the rhythm and harmony of things. How a person may shift his or her weight or the randomness of a tossed-off pair of shoes, is usually what catches my eye. I am especially interested in the nuances of color. My brushstrokes tend to be expressive while my color use is usually bright and fresh. I strongly believe in studying nature, painting from life and working hard. Paintings can be a way to communicate when you can't quite find the right words just like music can evoke the right emotions you feel or want to express.
