Day Dreamin' by Kathleen Cencula was awarded the BoldBrush Award in the October 2017 BoldBrush Painting Competition.
Kathleen Cencula is a realist painter communicating the energy and emotional connection she feels to the animals she paints.
Mostly self taught, Kathleen has attended workshops to gain new insight and perspective with such notable artists as Robert
Bateman, Jan Martin McGuire and Stephan Quiller.
Her paintings have won many awards from local to international exhibits.
She honors her artistic roots coming from two very supportive and creative people, her Mom and Dad.
Artistic abilities were apparent in her Dad and his family, so Kathleen proudly signs with her given last name of her Dad, Cencula. At an early age her Mom taught her to visualize and more, so her Mom's maiden name, Czekaj, is in the paintings. Earlier works will see Czekaj right under Cencula. In current works the 'Czekaj' is placed somewhere within the painting.
Kathleen was born in Phoenix, Arizona which will always have a special place in her heart. She has spent most of her life in northern Illinois, now residing in Mundelein, Illinois.
"The principles of true art is not to portray, but to evoke." - Jerzy Kosinski
In my paintings I strive for something that is not seen, but rather felt. There are the usual patterns of light, dark colors, shapes,
the visual path, etc ~ but I am looking for something more.
My goal is to communicate the strong energy and emotional connection I have always felt with animals, and them with me.
As my paintings ever evolve I will strive to deepen the visual of that connection between the animal and the viewer, hoping the
viewer will feel the energy, the emotion coming through.
To feel that energy of each animal and place, and to bring that rich experience to my paintings, is why I choose to personally
photograph the majority of the animals for future reference for my paintings.
My inspiration usually comes from an animal's expression, pose or experience. I am also inspired by, and hoping to express,
their bonds and relationships with their family members and/or other animals.
Realism with details is a part of my core and this naturally has to be brought into my acrylic paintings to be a true extension
of who I am. The realism also helps me bring a good depiction of the animal's expression.
Wildlife and domestic animals are my main passion, but I do paint beyond into landscapes, architectural, floral and still life.
