Floundering Around: At Least You're Moving

by Carolyn Henderson on 6/30/2014 7:37:55 AM
6 Comments

You don't have the money or means to market yourself the way a mega-corporation does, so it's highly unlikely that you'll have a problem with demand, be unable to meet it, and lose all those customers. The more likely scenario is that you'll create the product, put it out there, and get a few bites. From those bites, you'll learn what works, and what doesn't, and if you make an error on one person's order, or two people's, you can do what the mega-corporations increasingly don't do: You can write the person individually, explain the situation, apologize, and make it right. The Problem With Painting Workshops

by John P. Weiss on 6/28/2014 8:07:55 AM
28 Comments

So here's the deal. Take those workshops, copy those museum masterpieces until you've reached a level of true proficiency. Then stop all that. Pack up your paint box easel and spend some serious time digesting the world around you. Slow down, even when you think you're wasting time. Study, think, experiment, and stop trying to ape someone else. Inside you is a unique voice. It has been whispering in your ear for a long time, waiting for you to blossom. [...]

But in order to realize any success at all, it is necessary to adapt or learn these skills. We are creating a product, and in selling the product, if we are so inclined, we should treat it as any business. [...]

We often think of art this way, as taking from the world around us and translating it into a new expression. People look at art and try to see the world in the painting. Even in abstraction, modernism, expressionism and any totally non-subjective work the viewer looks for the world - at least to find harmonies of color, shape and texture. [...]
