Artist Janet Fish Reminds Us That the Road is Never Easy

In closing, I know that many readers have experienced economic hardships over the last several years. Some of you have mentioned that you have taken a second job in addition to a 'day job' -- others have mentioned cutting corners on art materials and studio space. These situations are often mentioned with a sense of guilt or shame. Keep your chin up! Clearly some of the most famous artists have 'been there' as well at some point -- even after reaching a high level of financial success. You are not experiencing failure... you are experiencing life. The road is never easy... even when it appears that you have found your art marketing path. [...]

3 Little Words: Corral That Difficult Customer With This Magic Phrase

The truth is, some people wonít ever pay your asking price. They have to get ďa dealĒ. Some people will denigrate your work, hoping to get a better price. Some people have no intention of buying your work at all. They simply recognize that itís easy to pull your chain if you are too eager to sell. Some people enjoy that. Some donít know better. Theyíve been told that nowadays, itís always okay to bargain, even department stores and art galleries. [...]

Who Wants to Deal With All That Stress?

In the end, I will sell more paintings if I spend more time at the easel. My time at the easel is not effective if I'm stressed and worrying about a lot of other issues. I need to focus on the painting. In addition, if my painting looks good, I'll feel less stress about that. When you have limited time, you better that you can set up a good situation at the easel, the better that you'll do in the long run. [...]

All Work and No Play?

Art always gives more even when narrowed down as in minimalism or some conceptual expressions. The emotional range and the intellectual range of art certainly can vary for not every artistís purpose or intention is the same. Whether we choose to think of art as seriously playful or playfully serious, we should recognize that art is rarely simply playful. Most of the time there is more on the artistís mind. [...]

Youíre the Only One Who Can Be Yourself

Iím not sure whoís saying this, but a lot of people are believing it, and many people who would be incredibly happy -- and very good at -- painting certain subjects in a particular style, force themselves, instead, to adopt other subject matter and adapt to other ways of painting it. Paging through the magazines, they see that this person is considered very good, and that style is true art, and whether they want to or not, they start to accept what they are repeatedly told. [...]

Leave Time for Experimentation

For those of us trying to make it as professional artists, sales are important. And sometimes we hit upon a winning formula that generates consistent sales. Now what do we do? Do we take the "safe" road and stick with the formula? Or do we keep pressing on and trying new things? Realistically (and ideally), our best course is to do both. Realistically, we need the sales: sales mean supplies for future paintings, a psychological lift, and maybe even bread for the table. But if we don't leave time for experimentation our work will stagnate and devolve into predictability and mediocrity. [...]

Pros and (Mostly) Cons of Sight-size Method

The problem with sight-size is that if you have become dependent upon it, you may not have the confidence (or worse yet, the ability) to accurately draw something that isnít exactly as you see it. The Decline of Art in the News

What does this decline in art news mean for artists? It means we must figure out how to stay in the conversation. The first step to remaining relevant is to understand the value of our art. I am not talking about money. What value do we bring to people? Why should people care about our painting or sculpture? [...]

Lessons From the Move: Who Your REAL Friends Are

So, when life throws you a curve, good or bad, note who actually shows up. See who makes an effort to spend more time with you. Listen to those who offer support and encouraging words - something a little more useful than, ďOh, youíll be okay. Gotta run!Ē Cherish those who listen deeply and well. Embrace those who run errands, who lend a hand, who truly show you how much you mean to them. Iím not condemning those who donít. We all have our issues, and sometimes weíre dealing with our own stuff. Not all of us can drop everything to be of service. Many connections are based on convenience, not on true friendship. And some people simply donít handle change well. [...]
