Let's Have an Ar(t)gument: Is specialization important?

by Brian Sherwin on 11/26/2014 7:11:09 AM
21 Comments

Don't get me wrong-- It is great to branch out in the studio! But as far as exhibiting is concerned, I think specialization -- a clear focus of style and methods -- is of great importance if you want to increase your chances of the exhibit having a lasting impact on viewers. The way you explore art in your studio may not be the best way to present yourself within the context of an art exhibit. [...]

I Like Monday Mornings... And I Cannot Lie

by Doug Hoppes on 11/24/2014 7:31:09 AM
14 Comments

I find when my life is predictable, I am able to concentrate more. I can lay out plans and prioritize the tasks that need to be done. If everything is always changing, you can't make plans. You are reacting rather than controlling the situation. You only have a certain amount of energy and it's wise to spend it wisely. So, for my art career, it's all about balance and optimism. This helps me grow my art, improve my training methods and, more importantly, be a happier person. [...]

The Value of Art

by Jim Benest on 11/18/2014 7:14:15 AM

But there is the other side, the emotional side. How does the artwork make you feel? Do you feel drawn into it? Does it make you feel excited and full of energy? Does it make you feel peaceful and relaxed? Or does it make you stop and ponder what the artist is communicating? Good art should make you feel something every time you look at it. Otherwise it is just wallpaper. [...]

Let's Have an Ar(t)gument: When a gallery refuses to sell art to a customer

by Brian Sherwin on 11/12/2014 8:23:51 AM
15 Comments

I'm interested in knowing how YOU would feel if the gallery representing you refused to sell your work to a potential buyer. Would you be upset if your gallery made the decision based on bold assumptions concerning the motive or status of the prospective buyer? Would you view it as the gallery looking out for your best interest -- or would you view it as a lost opportunity 'rooted' in fear? Would you reconsider your relationship with the gallery if a scenario like this happened? [...]
