Letting Go... So Something New Can Come In

Itís frightening. Itís daunting. Itís exhausting to think about. Change is always hard and big changes are downright overwhelming. But itís also exciting and energizing. The Advantages of Plein Air Painting

The best advantage of painting plein air is that all the senses are engaged. You are essentially making a first-class memory. Sight, smell, sound, and touch are simultaneously involved. Even if you can't touch the landscape, you can feel the breeze (and hopefully not fierce wind or bug bites). You're fully experiencing 3 dimensional life, which also engages human emotion. Your painting becomes a personal response to the subject at hand. Whereas, painting from a photograph is a calculated response with diminished emotion. Sure, I paint plenty of landscapes from photos in the studio, but I can never fully replace the original experience of studying a place I adore in real life. [...]

Screeching Forward at a Slugís Pace

Thatís how we felt, though -- and thatís probably how you feel when you embark on learning something new -- something that everybody else seems to know already and do well -- and find yourself not moving anywhere. Thereís no userís manual. Thereís no online support. The Chat line has more Chit in it than Chat. If thereís a phone number, it leads to a calling center on Jupiter. HowDoYouDoThis.com describes, in what looks like detail, a series of instructions that are useless because the categories and buttons they tell you to look for donít exist anymore. [...]

The Discipline of Art - No Time to Paint, You Say?

One doesn't wait for inspiration to occur. Art is a science and the old adage applies: it takes 10% talent and 90% work to solidify the work. Time, if allowed, can be an elusive barrier to production. Like a penny saved is a penny earned, an hour a day at the easel releases the energy and the painting can be viewed with perspective. [...]

Choosing a Lifeboat Over a Sinking Ship

So for now, I'm in experimental mode. I'll search for anything that floats in this sea of art sales, and I'll stay on a lifeboat, raft, or log, as long as it carries me.
