Does Limiting Print Editions Create Value?
by Lori Woodward on 7/31/2013 7:23:12 AM | 25 Comments |
To sum it up. When selling my reproductions, I list it as a giclee print. I don't get into the discussion of the difference between a print and mechanical reproduction because my print buyers don't care about that. People who do care about whether a work of art "might" be an investment buy my original works and even those may never increase in value. [...]

Quantity vs Quality in Making Art
by Poppy Balser on 7/27/2013 9:34:05 AM | 15 Comments |
Some might argue that focusing on quantity, even if it is only a quantity of one each day, will make for a large quantity of weak paintings. I am fighting that possibility as best I can. I am critiquing as I go along so you are seeing the best of what I make. Some days, I make more than one painting and you see only the one that I am most pleased with. I feel that this daily practice at my art is helping me to improve. [...]

Fueling Passion
by Jack White on 7/25/2013 8:28:10 AM | 35 Comments |
We don’t have to live up to the expectations of others. Passion is personal. As long as our passion is fueled with the right stuff then keep on plodding forward. I’ll never be Mark Twain or Tom Clancy. But that’s okay, because neither of them could teach you to mix a boundless number of grays, or where to place the catch light in a portrait. [...]

Get ‘Em Drunk, and They’ll Buy Anything
by Carolyn Henderson on 7/23/2013 7:58:42 AM | 9 Comments |
Some say things and act out in fashions that later cause them moments of embarrassment, but very, very few lose control of their debit cards.
And while there are people who do, relying upon them -- and their moment of vulnerability -- for painting sales is about as sensible as securing your retirement annuity with proceeds from lotto tickets. [...]

I’m Not in the Mood
by Keith Bond on 7/22/2013 7:29:41 AM | 16 Comments |
If you want to be a professional artist, you will have deadlines, commitments, and maybe even demonstrations. You will need to perform and will need to show up to do the work. Even if you have no audience such as the demo, you cannot just blow off your responsibilities when you “don’t feel like painting”. [...]

Figuring Out Life as a Full Time Artist
by Daggi Wallace on 7/19/2013 7:48:26 AM | 19 Comments |
And then... here comes the hardest part of all... once our creation is born we have to launch it into the world! Not only do we have to learn to be vulnerable by putting our very personal creations out there for others to see and therefore be open to criticism and rejection, but we also have to learn about marketing and promotion in order to get it out there in the first place. There are so many skill sets a professional artist has to have, very few other jobs compare. It can be a 24/7 job, constantly on your mind. [...]

The Fable of the Cardinal
by Luann Udell on 7/18/2013 7:49:24 AM | 7 Comments |
Now some humans couldn’t put out bird feeders anymore. Some had no money. Some were too busy. And some had moved away.
But it turns out that there are ALWAYS people who like to feed birds. It’s a simple pleasure, and not that expensive (if you don’t get carried away!) And there are always new people who get interested in birds and want to put up a feeder or two.
The cardinal went back and told all his friends. All they had to do was LOOK AROUND FOR NEW BIRD FEEDERS. [...]

Art and Wine: They Go Together!
by Carolyn Henderson on 7/16/2013 7:18:07 AM | 10 Comments |
You are a business, and what you produce is valuable. Too frequently, artists -- who often tend to be sensitive, thoughtful people -- are pushed and pulled by a schizophrenic message that says, simultaneously, two things:
1) This is a charitable event.
2) This is a business making proposition. [...]

Artist Website Tips: Think about time when listing art exhibits
by Brian Sherwin on 7/12/2013 1:32:44 AM | 2 Comments |
I've gathered a lot of insight from art dealers, art writers, and artists over the years concerning how art exhibit information is listed on artist websites. One tip that has stood the 'test of time', pun intended, involves the timeframe of listed art exhibits. Point-blank, you want to avoid revealing any major time gaps when listing your exhibit history. That said, there are other things to consider -- time-wise -- when creating a list of past art exhibits. [...]

Artist John Ursillo explores a variety of mediums in his art studio. John has gained renown for his colored pencil artwork.
