by Lori Woodward on 2/24/2010 12:29:16 PM | 70 Comments |
|
Many artists neglect to take all their expenses into consideration when pricing their artwork, and therefore, falsely believe that they're making a profit, when in truth, they have not begun to cover the cost associated with running the business. [...]

What's the Lifetime Value of a Single Contact?
by Clint Watson on 2/23/2010 9:55:33 AM | 27 Comments |
|
Each person you know and meet has a "lifetime value" in terms of your career that is most certainly not immediately apparent. However, just as $1 in the bank will grow enormously over time through the "miracle" of compound interest, so will the benefits you receive from people *if* you treat each person with respect, honestly and with an attitude of how you can mutually help each other (not just what you can "get" from the other person) [...]

|
Are you getting the right people to join your mailing list and read your articles? Do you want collectors joining your list? I am sure the answer is yes. Do you want other artists joining your list? I am sure the answer is also yes. Do you want dealers? Probably yes. Others? Sure, why not? But which ones are most important to you? If you want to sell your work, then the collector must be the most important group. [...]

An Art Marketing Lesson From Your First Painting
by Clint Watson on 2/19/2010 8:45:56 AM | 6 Comments |
|
The thing is, that first painting taught you something. And the next painting taught you something else. And one-by-one, each painting taught you a little bit. You invested your time and money and purchased yourself an art "education" painting-by-painting, stroke-by-stroke. And today you're a much more accomplished artist because of that...Here's the lesson: Art marketing is the same way. [...]

Art Pricing Strategies 1
by Lori Woodward on 2/18/2010 12:52:13 PM | 63 Comments |
|
The value of art has more to do with how collectors regard the worth of the piece, and in order for an artist get "the big bucks", that artist's work must be sought out by collectors who have the means and desire to pay for it. [...]

Masterpiece in the Subway, Trash in the Museum
by Clint Watson on 2/16/2010 9:49:21 AM | 115 Comments |
|
I promise that I will always be willing to take a stand and discuss serious matters and will not shy away from "controversial" topics and become some sort of bland, corporate blog. That means, from time to time, that people will disagree with me -- that's OK. [...]

You have a gift that is unique to only yourself. No one else in the world can create the artwork you create. No one else in the world can say what you have to say in the way you say it. Only you can create your art. [...]

If you're wondering why you haven't seen new FineArtViews articles in a while, it's because they've moved....over to where they really should have been.

The Wordless USP
by Clint Watson on 2/9/2010 9:25:26 AM | 29 Comments |
|
Yes, you need to attract your unique audience, your Collector Clan. But you don't do it by coming up with a catchy slogan and then trying to find those people that "match" your slogan. You do it by honing your own unique style, sharing your art and letting (and helping) those people find you...So if you're wracking your brain for a tagline, or being told you need to spend time or money on doing that, then relax and get back to what being an artist is all about. I give you permission to go to your easel and develop your wordless USP [...]

Suppose you find a project that you are interested in. What do you do now? First you must determine if you are really qualified. Is your art at the quality it needs to be for such a project? If not, get better. If yes, then great! [...]

I know some of you are aware of how links work on the internet. Yet, for others, it's just a complete mystery. If you are in the latter group, don't feel bad because we are going to change that here and now.
For most artists, the word 'links' refers to the Links Category on their navigation bar. Trust me, there is much more to this little word than what appears on the surface. [...]
