My Mirror

In my recent interview I made the following comments: "soul mates aren’t found. Soul mates are made." and "you almost become a new being with a shared soul." (Of course, speaking about my wife)I find this idea echoed in some really cool lyrics in Justin Timberlake's new song, "Mirrors" (a beautifully written song, which I heard was about his desire to have his relationship with his wife be as strong and loving as his grandparents, whom you'll see the song is dedicated to in the opening scene of the video) when he says:"'Cause I don't wanna lose you now, I'm looking [...]

Changes, Surprises and the Future

Our FineArtViews editor, Carrie Turner, recently interviewed me for a new series for our members about the FASO team.  One of the questions led to an answer that was too long to be included in the original interview, so I've posted my answer here instead.     What are some of the things you’ve seen change the most since you started FASO?  Were you able to foretell the future of certain developments?  What were you most surprised by?  Any predictions for future developments?     On the consumer side, the two biggest changes in the past decade are the rise of social networks and the rise of [...]

You Look Like Bob Marley, Mon

Marley (Gina McLagan) [3]
"Taxi, mon?"  the gentleman asked me as we stepped off the ship.   "Tour of the Island, mon?"  another man called out.   "What would you like to do today, mon?  I can take you wherever you want to go."   "Sure you don't need a taxi?"    We had stepped out into a cacophony of enterprising gentlemen selling various services after our ship docked in St. Lucia.   You see, your editor and his wife had decided to take some time off and enjoy Christmas in the Caribbean.   After all, we figured, if we were going to be meeting St. Nick anyway, why not go ahead and meet St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and [...]

Surh Luchtel - Garys' Vineyard

Today, I'm launching a new article series that I've had in mind for many years: sharing my love of wine with my readers.  I've always delayed starting this series because I thought that I didn't have time to do the "proper" write-ups about each wine.  Over the weekend, I had an ephiphany:  I'm just going to share my recommendations and not worry too much about writing flowery words about each wine.  The simple fact I'm recommending it makes it obvious to the reader that I like it, and words don't really add much.  It's tasting that counts.   The current recommendation is Surh [...]

The Biggest Mistake on Most Artist Websites

The biggest mistake I see on most artist websites is not providing a way for the visitor to sign up for a newsletter... it's a big mistake. There are people like me who want to follow you, and if you don't give us a simple action to take on your website.....we'll leave. [...]

Do People Buy More Art in the Bad Economy?

Artists sometimes write me and blame their lack of sales on "the economy" as if that explains everything. I wonder: Is it really simply "the economy"? Or are there things these artists could be doing, but aren't, because they don't want to? Are there marketing channels these artists don't want to invest the time and energy learning? [...]

Twas the Week Before Christmas on the Finest of Ships

The following poem is what you get when you have a creative mind and are stuck in the middle of the ocean without a decent internet connection or guitar.  We needed some way to channel our creativity so when the ship left a survey in our cabin, instead of simply filling it out, we wrote a poem.  Since it was a Christmas cruise, the verses are to be read to the rhythm of "Twas the night before Christmas."  The items in bold are ship's crew members, or features of the ship itself.  I post it here just as a way to [...]
