Artist's Biography Lea Placek
Lea Placek is a classically trained artist who specializes in watercolor and oil painting, with a background in Illustration. Early on as a child, she felt compelled to recreate images realistically and would practice her drawing techniques endlessly until she achieved this with satisfaction. She spent every weekend as a child in private art classes learning and growing. This practice lead her to a beginning in the Illustration department at the University, but she soon learned her true passion was painting. Lea feels blessed to be able to paint the things that inspire her, not only as an artist, but as a human being. Her technique as an artist is as important to her as her subject matter. Lea focuses on how objects relate to each other and how light affects them. She continues to find endless inspiration in the simple things that surround us every day, whether it is the way the light reflects off of a piece of crystal or how that same ray of light passes through the the translucent petals of a flower. She breathes such life into her paintings, with her subjects becoming real before your eyes. Lea’s beautiful floral portraits and still life paintings remind us to pause for a moment, just simply “smell the roses,” and realize how magical the common place really is.
In 1994, Lea was the recipient of the Jack Arends Talent Based Full Tuition Waiver Scholarship from Northern Illinois University. In 1998, she graduated with Honors from the School of Visual and Performing Arts with a Bachelors of Fine Art, emphasis in watercolor painting. Since graduation, Lea has had the honor to study with some of today's greatest painters, taking many week-long, intense painting, workshops.
