Artist Karen Wilkerson
It seems I have always been interested in art. My mother is an artist and I was encouraged to draw and paint while growing up. I studied life drawing, design and art history at the University of Texas. After receiving my degree, I taught school for eight years before our two children were born. I chose to stay at home and be a full time mom during their early years. As they got older, I devoted more and more time to painting and studying art.
I have studied with many prominent instructors and feel this has been much more valuable than formal university classes. I have been inspired by painting trips to Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, California, New Mexico and Colorado. I find it exhilarating to paint plein air with other artists. I spend most summers painting the beautiful town of Carmel, California.
When not traveling, the Texas landscape is a favorite subject matter. Much of our time is spent at our Texas ranch where there is an endless array of paintings just waiting to be put on canvas. Hopefully, these paintings are an escape from the hectic lives most people lead. I want to impart a sense of calm and tranquility that comes from nature.
My paintings are about a sense of place. I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively. I want to share with the viewer of my paintings my excitement about my surroundings. Truly experiencing a place involves being quiet and evoking all the senses. It is not my desire to record every detail, but to get the essense of the place. My paintings are a record of my response to the patterns of shapes and the effects of light at a partiular moment in time.
