Artist Julia Ralston
Working en plein air and in the studio using her own photographs and sketches, Julia's work expresses movement and color using loose brushwork and a variety of application methods. Her paintings are in private and corporate collections in the United States. She maintains a summer studio in the North Carolina mountains and winters in the South Carolina lowcountry. If she's not in the studio, you can find her out on the trail stalking birds and new compositions.
"I love the freshness of getting something down fast on paper or canvas. Working large, I paint quickly at first to record the essence of the image. As the painting develops, I slow down, giving attention to values and overlapping darks and lights, sometimes letting the first layer show through.
The painting process--manipulating the visual elements-- is a game for me. Making decisions using value, color and line appeal to me in a way that wordsmiths feel about writing poetry or crafting a story. I am attentive to the smells, the wind, and the light and energy of a place, translating these impressions onto the canvas using color and brushstroke. Robert Henri talks about having a sense of freedom, and expressing simply the vital essence of a place or thing; I agree that this inherent beauty is what we remember about a place and take home at the end of the day.
