Artist Elaine Koehler
The love of working with my hands and enjoying the process of making art has always been part of me.
Pastels have been my medium of choice for over 20 years. I studied with Lillian Longley who was a student of Henry Hensche at the Cape Cod School of Art. I enjoy the fact that I can make marks like drawing, or by using the sides of the pastels, can lay down what simulates a brush stroke. The color selection is endless and the immediacy a bonus. Although pastels remain my primary medium I am enjoying getting back to brushwork and using oils and acrylics as well.
Retirement brought my husband and me from upstate New York to New Mexico. Like other artists, I enjoy the light of New Mexico and its effect on the environment. As a member of the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico I have enjoyed the chance to get outdoors and experience what I call the ultimate in art making–painting en plein air! There’s nothing like the thrill of standing in the midst of God’s creation watching the drama as the light moves across the landscape. My paintings spring from a desire to share these emotions.
